Applying to UConn Counselor Education Programs
How do I apply to the UConn Counselor Education Programs?
Applicants to UConn's Counselor Education programs must have earned a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. If your degree does not include at least 9 credit hours in the social sciences, such as education, sociology, psychology, etc., you may be required to complete an additional nine credit hours of study. However, these background courses will not be included as part of the total credit hours needed for graduation from UConn. The Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) Online Graduate Certificate is not approved for students residing outside of the United States.

UConn Counselor Education programs accept students once per year. The master’s, sixth-year, and doctorate programs are fall semester starts; the Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) Online Graduate Certificate is a summer semester start.

Please provide the following items. Completed applications must be received by December 1 in order to be reviewed.
- Resumé
- Application Essay
- Letters of recommendation (Three needed for master’s and sixth-year applicants; One for LPC certificate program applicants):
- During the application process, an applicant is asked to provide contact information for three recommenders. The recommenders submitting letters on your behalf should do so electronically through our application system. The recommenders will be sent an email with log-in information on where they can upload letters of recommendation. Be sure to mark ‘Yes’ for the online submission question on the Provider Input Form.
- At least one letter of recommendation should speak to your academic abilities and readiness to engage in graduate level coursework.
- Official TOEFL score (for international students)
- Visit the Graduate School’s website for more details and testing information.
- Official transcript from each college or university attended (upload a PDF version within the online application)
- Official transcripts of collegiate work can be mailed to:

- PRAXIS Scores (Master’s and sixth-year program applicants only):
- Applicants must submit PRAXIS scores if they do not qualify for a waiver. Waiver criteria includes:
- SAT: Have a combined score of 1100 on the mathematics and critical reading sections, with neither subtest score below 450 Points.
- ACT: Score no less than 22 on the English subtest and no less than 19 on the mathematics subtest.
- GRE: Have a combined score of 297 on the quantitative reasoning and verbal reasoning tests with no less than a score of 144 in quantitative reasoning and 150 in verbal reasoning, plus a minimum analytic writing score of 4.0.
- If you would like to submit GRE scores, they will be reviewed as part of your application.
- GRE Scores are not required.
Applications are evaluated as soon as the student’s file is complete.

Important Deadline
The UConn Counselor Education master’s, sixth-year, and doctoral programs only accept students to the fall semester. Please submit materials no later than December 1 to begin the following fall semester.
The Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) Online Graduate Certificate program only accepts students to the summer semester. Please submit materials no later than December 1 to begin the following summer semester.
Applications submitted after the designated deadline will be considered on a space available basis until enrollment caps are reached, or, considered for admission to the following semester. There is a $75 online application fee. Application fee waivers are available on a limited basis to candidates who demonstrate financial need. The Graduate School at UConn waives the application fee for prospective students associated with various organizations; to find out if you are eligible for an application fee waiver through the Graduate School, please see the Fee Waiver Policy. Upon acceptance, a $1000 non-refundable deposit toward your tuition will be required prior to course registration, as well as, electronic or hard copy submission of official transcripts.

International Students: This program is a part-time or full-time and online program. Pursuant to U.S. immigration regulations, the University of Connecticut may not sponsor F-1 and J-1 visas for the purpose of coming to the U.S. for enrollment in this program. International students may enroll in this program if they are currently in the U.S. in another visa status that permits foreign nationals to engage in school enrollment while meeting their primary visa objective.
