Dr. O’Neil
Dr. O’Neil has recently developed a video lecture on “Teaching the Psychology of Men” for the teaching the psychology of men web page : https://sites.google.com/site/teachingthepsychologyofmen/
The web page is currently being revised and the lecture highlights information in the following journal publication, which is co-authored by Dr. Sara Renzulli who is also on our faculty:
O’Neil, J.M. & Renzulli, S. (2013). Introduction to the special: Teaching the psychology of men – A Call to Action. Psychology of Men and Masculinity. 14, 221-229.
Dr. O’Neil is also currently researching the first debate/discussion in counseling about sexist masculinity between Sigmund Freud and Alfred Adler. Adler’s lectures on Masculine Protest in 1911-1912 infuriated Freud so much that it led to Adler’s leaving the Vienna Psychoanalytic Association and a permanent split between the two pioneers in counseling and psychology. What do Alfred Adler’s views of gender roles and psychosocial development have to do with school counseling? Adler was the first mental health professional to advocate working directly in schools with students and developing Child Guidance Clinics. He actually discussed psychoeducational interventions in schools and how to do it. Adler’s theories and counseling practices are still strikingly relevant today for all school counselors and mental health professionals.
