Advice for Incoming Students:

Remember to take a moment to gather yourselves, to breathe, and to reground. The work that you are doing, every assignment, every project, every hour of engagement in your preparation toward becoming a counselor will require for you to care for yourself in order for you to offer care to others. This means that you might take just a few moments to decompress, to remember yourself, or to try out a new self-care activity that you have been hearing about. This time spent engaging in caring for yourself does not always have to be long, nor does it have to require an airplane ticket; it can be as simple as listening to your favorite song, witnessing the sunlight for a moment, or noticing your breath.

    Dr. O’Neil

    Quote:

“Let no one be discouraged by the belief

there is nothing one man or woman can do

against the enormous array of the world’s ills,

against misery and ignorance, injustice, and violence…

    Few will have the greatness to bend history itself;

but each of us can work to change a small portion

of events, and in the total of all those acts will be written

    the history of this generation.

It is from numberless diverse acts of courage and belief

    that history is shaped.

Each time a man stands up for an ideal,

    or strikes out against injustice,

or acts to improve the lot of others,

he sends a tiny ripple of hope,

and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring,

those ripples build a current which can seep down

the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.”

    – Robert F. Kennedy

    Advice for Incoming Students:

I would advise new or incoming graduate students to communicate with professors proactively, stay organized, and not take on too much – meaning, make sure they have time to ‘think’ and reflect on what they are learning and reading about.
