The faculty in the Neag School’s Counselor Education Program are among the top experts in their field. Here are their recent accomplishments in publishing, service, and leadership.

Published Works & Conferences:

  • Two women present at a conference.
    Dr. Haynes-Thoby presents at the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision Conference in Denver, Colorado.

    My work on Black women experiencing intimate partner violence and resilience was featured on the Phys.org website and the Penn State website.

  • I am currently leading a research team on trauma and counselor licensure requirements across states with student members of the International Association for Resilience and Trauma Counseling
  • A few recent conferences that I presented my research included:
    • The Bridging the Gap Symposium, a conference presented by the National Board for Certified Counselors, where I presented my work entitled “Operationalizing trauma-informed practices within community-facing organizations.”
    • The American Educational Research Association, where I co-presented a paper with colleagues at the University of Florida, entitled “Grieving out loud: An interdisciplinary understand of Black girlhood and culturally reflective trauma-informed care.”
    • And, the Evidence-Based School Counseling Conference, where I presented my work on “School Counselor’s Use of Culturally-Responsive Interventions During a Dual Pandemic.”
    • In October, presented my work on Trauma-Informed Counseling Supervision with a former mentee, and I will co-present work on flipped classrooms that aim to center student needs using anti-racist trauma-informed pedagogies.

Advice for Incoming Students:

Remember to take a moment to gather yourselves, to breathe, and to reground. The work that you are doing, every assignment, every project, every hour of engagement in your preparation toward becoming a counselor will require for you to care for yourself in order for you to offer care to others. This means that you might take just a few moments to decompress, to remember yourself, or to try out a new self-care activity that you have been hearing about. This time spent engaging in caring for yourself does not always have to be long, nor does it have to require an airplane ticket; it can be as simple as listening to your favorite song, witnessing the sunlight for a moment, or noticing your breath.

    I spent my summer making five videos and developing content for the Teaching the Psychology of Men Web Resource Page and the Gender Role Conflict and Journey Research Web Page.

    Advice for Incoming Students:

    Manage your time to make your graduate studies the top priority to develop your personal/professional identity and skills.

    Current/Recent Work:

    I am working on a comprehensive literature review of the term Neurodiversity and the Neurodiversity movement.

    Advice for Incoming Students:

    I would advise new or incoming graduate students to communicate with professors proactively, stay organized, and not take on too much – meaning, make sure they have time to ‘think’ and reflect on what they are learning and reading about.
